In the Kruger Park you are likely to see close to one and a half thousand lions who
have staked out their territories. Each pride of lions clays claim to its own territory. They will guard their
domain with fierce pride and jealously. They are inclined to be lazy, preferring to spend the hot part of the day
in the shade. They are easier to see in the early morning or late afternoon. They are mostly found in the central
areas of the Kruger National Park around Crocodile Bridge and Lower Sabie. Zebra and wildebeest are their favorite
prey. They are not afraid to pull down a buffalo or a giraffe when participating in a military style pack hunt.
The males tend to be very assumptive - sending the females out to do most of the hunting. If push comes to shove the single males and males from male groups will kill their own prey. They hunt as a team and have a remarkable sense of strategy. The males take up a position forcing the prey to move in the direction of the females who will then finish the 'dirty' work. The tactics also include fanning and encircling formations to herd their prey. Lions communicate by means of a large repertoire of sounds and body language. |
