Africa has high standards of dietary supply, service and hygiene in all of its developed centers but also has a large third world component which has its own unique flair – which requires caution. Special dietary requirements at accommodation / hotels should be indicated on accommodation reservation.

HEALTH

It is usually best to assume that running water is not safe to drink, and stick to bottled water – or if on an expedition in the bush – boiled or treated water. Sun screens should be used for skin protection. Malaria risks – predominantly in the malignant form P falciparum – exist throughout the year in certain areas Africa. Your doctor will advise on the best precautions to take, these may differ based on the area you are exploring and your personal requirements.Yellow fever vaccination certificates are required from visitors traveling through, or disembarking in an infected country. Check further health requirements with your embassy foreign office. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE COMPREHENSIVE INSURANCE, WE WILL USUALLY ASK TO HAVE PROOF OF A POLICY.

TIPPING

Tipping is expected in some instances, your guide will advise but it is usually obvious who has helped make your trip and a small tip can sometimes go a long way.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATE

The currency that you will be using will obviously depend on where you want to go! That said it is handy to have a few dollars – they seem to hold a value everywhere.

With the exception of the South African Rand, you will not be able to buy the currency until you land. Your guide will advise on the cheapest and safest places to do your exchange. Make sure you inform your bank where you are traveling to if you wish to use your card.
